TikTok or Instagram Reels: where should a product brand test first?
Start where a new post reaches strangers fastest, then confirm on the platform where your buyers already follow you.
Why we start on TikTok
TikTok's For You feed shows a new post to people who do not follow the account. That means even a small, new account gets a real first audience, and you learn something from every post.
On Instagram, a new account with few followers is shown to far fewer strangers. That is why our free test runs on 3 TikTok posts, and Instagram comes in with the pilot.
Where Instagram earns its place
Many product brands sell to people who already follow them on Instagram. Once a post has worked on TikTok, testing the same idea as a Reel tells you whether it also works with that audience.
The pilot runs on 5 accounts: 3 TikTok, 2 Instagram. The same idea is tested on both, so you can see where it does better.
Keep the post the same
When you move a post from TikTok to Reels, keep the file and the first line the same. If you change the hook, you are testing a new post, not the same idea on a new platform.
Remove platform-specific details, such as a TikTok sound that is not available on Instagram, and check the text is still readable in Instagram's crop.
A simple order
For a brand with limited time, this order wastes the least effort.
- Test 3 existing posts on TikTok.
- Take the best idea and make 2 more posts from it.
- Test those on TikTok and Instagram together.
- Post the winner on your own account, then promote it.
